To prepare and implement a wide variety of environmental programs in areas of integrated waste management, water conservation and other resources.  This position is currently funded through the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2019), with the potential for continued funding in the next fiscal year.


This is a part-time, temporary Conservation Coordinator position. The City of Woodland has three full-time Conservation Coordinators, each of which is focused on different environmental program areas. The coordinators work in a highly collaborative manner, with each position supporting and assisting the others. The candidate will primarily support the Water Conservation Coordinator, but may also assist the other Conservation Coordinators.  Specific duties and responsibilities include:


  • Performing a variety of functions related to educating community members about the City of Woodland’s Water Conservation Program and ways to conserve water.
  • Responding to resident and staff notifications about suspected water waste and maintaining records of complaints, investigations, and outreach performed.
  • Using water consumption records to identify and help address potential leaks and other abnormal water consumption situations.
  • Responding to telephone and email inquiries about water issues.
  • Providing literature, water conservation devices, and verbal instructions to community members regarding water efficient practices.
  • Helping to plan and staff Environmental Services community outreach events.
  • Assisting with creating literature, brochures, social media postings, videos, and other materials to promote water conservation and environmental awareness.


Preference will be given to applicants with 2-3 years of increasingly responsible work experience in performing public outreach, customer service, and related work, preferably including experience working with a water agency or public utility. The ideal candidate will be familiar with regulatory issues and principles pertaining to urban water supply and water quality and with how these relate to energy conservation, waste, habitat quality, and other environmental issues.  The position calls for a high level of public contact; good writing skills; ability to work both independently and in a close team relationship as needed; and ability to prioritize multiple programs and activities. Preferably the candidate will have experience developing multi-media outreach materials, such as social media posts, brochures, flyers, and informational videos.



Coordinates and updates the City’s waste reduction and integrated waste management program; develop program materials for presentations to schools, community and neighborhood groups.  Track and analyze waste management-related legislation; make recommendations for City involvement in pending legislation and compliance and implementation of existing legislation.  Develop program and time schedules for implementation of water conservation and/or integrated waste management programs; accumulate data and prepare reports, including informational flyers, press releases, articles and prepare Council Communications and other correspondence.  Provide general information to the public, other City departments, and other government agencies pertaining to waste reduction, integrated waste management, and other environmental programs including storm water protection and habitat conservation. Regular and consistent attendance.



Keep abreast of current developments, trends, legislative action and practices in the field of integrated waste management storm water, water conservation and other environmental programs.  Identify, prepare and manage grants from a variety of funding sources.  Assist with contract management, develop program protocols, and create tracking systems.  Prepare and track internal division annual budget.  Plan, coordinate and update internal city recycling programs.  Represent the City at board, commission and professional group meetings as necessary.  Perform related duties as assigned.  Work cooperatively with others.




Completion of two (2) years of college with major coursework in business, physical science, public administration, environmental studies, or a closely related field.



One (1) year of experience developing, promoting, or coordinating environmental, conservation or public outreach programs.


License or Certificate:

Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver's License.

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  All of these positions are temporary part time.  Temporary employees work no more than an average of 130 hours per month and no more than 960 hours in a Fiscal Year.


The pay cycle is monthly.  Pay day is the last working day of the month.  With the exception of worker's compensation coverage, no other benefits compensations are provided.  Employees must contribute 1.45% of salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan in accordance with Federal Law.
