About the Position:

The Water Services Worker (WSW) V coordinates and schedules skilled crews and performs a variety of journeyman level work in maintaining and repairing the City's water distribution system, including all mechanical aspects of related equipment.  Investigations and minor repairs to the sewage collection system may be required.

PLEASE NOTE: Years of experience are based on a work schedule of 2,080 hours per year for full-time positions and 1,040 hours per year for part-time positions, and while work experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, depending upon the job classification, education may not be substituted for work experience. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • Three years' experience in the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems.
  • Six months' crew leadership experience in excavation and underground pipe work.
  • Preferred:  backhoe experience.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements:
The Scottsdale Water Resources Division offers an Operator Certification Incentive Program up to $750.00 per certification for those employees who obtain certifications above what is required of their positions. The department recognizes the intrinsic value of operator certifications and the added value to the city of having a workforce that possess them.?
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date.  The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
  • Must possess and maintain Grade 3 operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within the disciplines of Water Distribution or Water Treatment.
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on department/section assignment.

Essential Functions

  • Performs maintenance and/or additions to the water transmission and distribution system. Maintains water mains, fire hydrants, valves and water services.
  • Performs maintenance and control work on various pressure control devices and adjusts the system to meet specific demands.
  • Directs the operation of a high velocity sewer vacuum truck; adjusts manhole covers and performs main line sewer repairs.
  • Performs pipeline construction and fabrication at work sites.
  • Communicates goals of the division and department; assists in the development of plans and measurement for evaluation; and provides information for the evaluation of the performance of personnel.
  • Observes and monitors personnel performance to determine compliance with all prescribed operating and safety practices.
  • Maintains accurate work order data entry for all work taking place on the water distribution system.
  • Oversees maintenance and testing of vacuum/air release devices within the City distribution system.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Most work is performed in a City office environment, coordinating assignments while handling phone and radio calls.
  • Travels to various construction locations to monitor and guide project progress.
  • May perform manual work that requires standing and walking or moving for continuous periods of time; lifting, bending and climbing steep and rough terrain.
  • Works in small areas and must climb ladders or steps to reach objects or enter trenches.
  • Moves and lifts up to 50 pounds both short and long distances.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, inclement weather and temperature extremes.
  • May have to respond to emergency calls at any time, including nights and weekends.
