The City of South Portland is currently seeking a full time wastewater treatment plant Operator I.  This position participates in the day-to-day operation, monitoring and control of the City’s wastewater treatment facility and pumping stations. The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Chief Operator.

The Operator I will be responsible for monitoring and documenting plant operations, completing routine laboratory testing on treatment plant wastewater samples, operating the sludge processing equipment and the monitoring of required chemicals. The incumbent will perform routine housekeeping duties, and preventative maintenance tasks including assisting maintenance at the plant, and pump stations.

Ideal applicants should have strong knowledge of the equipment, facilities, processes, methods and procedures used in wastewater treatment operations and maintenance activities. Training is available.  High School graduate or equivalent required, supplemented by one (1) year post-secondary college or technical training in biology, environmental science, chemistry or related field. One (1) year of experience in a wastewater utility highly preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and experience total totaling at least one year. A valid Maine Driver’s license is required. A Maine DEP Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s Certificate is preferred upon hire, and required within 2 years of date of hire. Candidates must have the availability to be on-call in rotation with other operators in order to be considered.
