Position Overview
 
Since 1912, Austin Water has been committed to provide safe, reliable, high quality, sustainable and affordable water services to customers in the Austin area. In 2012, Austin Water launched the Renewing Austin Program focusing on replacing and upgrading water distribution infrastructure with history of multiple breaks to ensure the reliability and quality of Austin’s water supply. In addition, the program includes replacement of wastewater lines in need of replacement and coordinates the need for inclusion of storm sewer pipes in the projects.

Austin Water currently has an opening for an engineer to serve in the role of an Austin Water Sponsor. AW assigns a Project Sponsor to every renewal project to provide assistance in management and coordination of the projects, and to oversee AW’s interests in the projects. AW Sponsors understand and navigate the CIP process which allows us to replace our infrastructure. AW has many CIP ongoing at the same time at various stages of planning, design, and construction. AW Sponsors work with different entities to ensure these projects are completed on time and within budget.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate Engineer A
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job.
 
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • None.
 
 
Graduate Engineer B
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a related field, plus two (2) years of experience in engineering.
 
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Texas: Engineer – In Training Certification.
 
 
Engineer A
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus four (4) years of engineering experience acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
 
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.
 
 
Engineer B
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to engineering, plus six (6) years of experience in engineering acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
 
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.
 
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience: 
 
  • Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering
  • Knowledge or experience in capital improvement project design or construction related to water and wastewater lines
  • Knowledge or experience in relocation of water and wastewater lines along state highways and county roads a plus
  • Knowledge or experience in sponsoring or project management, budgeting, expenditure and implementation of capital improvement projects
  • Willing to regularly interact with different levels of personnel throughout an organization and adapting communication styles to meet the needs of internal and external customers
  • Able to present and communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner
  • Knowledge with GIS a plus
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location
 
Pay Range
This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications:
  • Graduate Engineer A: $31.65 – $39.56
  • Graduate Engineer B: $32.89 – $41.93
  • Engineer A: $34.86 – $44.45
  • Engineer B: $36.95 – $47.12
 
Hours
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with some flexibility.
Some hybrid opportunities available. May work other hours to meet business needs
