This position is responsible for planning, scheduling, coordinating, and supervising the operations, maintenance and analytical activities of the wastewater treatment facilities lift stations, and laboratory functions. The division manager will ensure compliance with municipal, state, and federal regulations regarding operation, maintenance, and final effluent quality standards of the City’s permitted discharges. This position is also responsible for all aspects of the City’s Industrial Pretreatment Program, Biosolids Reuse Program in accordance with the overall objectives of the Clean Water Act, and administering the laboratory, including directing and performing laboratory analysis as required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and the Illinois Department of Public Health in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. The position may also be required to manage the water and sewer collection activities related to operation, maintenance and regulatory issues, as well as assist the Environmental Services Manager and the Assistant Director of Public Works in setting short and long term divisional goals and objectives, and in preparing and administering the environmental services budget.
Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field (or the ability to obtain one within a reasonable and agreed upon length of time). A minimum of eight (8) years of technical experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, maintenance and repair, as well as five (5) years supervisory experience is required. Possession of a current Illinois Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s License issued by the Illinois EPA, or receipt of one within one year of commencing employment or transfer into position is required. Additional water treatment plant operators license issued by the Illinois EPA is preferred, or willingness to obtain. Experience supervising in a union environment is preferred.
Must possess the ability to take initiative, exercise professional and independent judgment, formulate recommendations, and make sound decisions. Exceptional oral and written communication skills, to build rapport with co-workers, contractors, management, elected officials, and the public are essential. Computer skills with Outlook, Word, and Excel are required.
Applicants must be able to work under varying environmental conditions and perform moderate physical activity, lifting up to 50 pounds. In addition, applicants must be able and willing to respond to emergency calls twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, carry a wireless communications device, and possess a valid CDL or acquire one within 6 months of hire. If selected, successful completion of a background check, physical, drug screen, and functional capacity evaluation are required.
Range is $85,000 - $120,000 with starting pay commensurate with experience. Excellent benefit package provided.
