GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: 
The purpose of this classification is to collect and analyze a wide variety of water and wastewater samples from various collection points throughout the City.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Collects water/wastewater samples from a wide variety of collection points, and prepares such for transport for laboratory analysis; prepares field sampling and testing kits; maintains accurate and complete chain of custody and field work records and logs.
  • Performs chemical, physical and biological analyses of raw and/or treated water and wastewater samples as required by regulatory agencies, ensuring the use of current approved methods in all procedures.
  • Analyzes samples for the presence and/or levels of various agents, i.e., phosphorus, coliform, turbidity, pH, color, fluoride, ammonia, chlorophyll, conductivity, calcium, alkalinity, sulfates, oil, grease, chlorine, minerals, and any additional State certified required analysis.
  • Utilizes various laboratory equipment and chemicals according to appropriate testing principles and procedures; records receiving and disposal dates for all laboratory chemicals.
  • Compiles test/analysis data and documentation for assimilation into quality assurance/control and environmental reporting requirements; maintains accurate records, covering analytical methods used, test results, standardizations, calibrations and other pertinent information.
  • Performs routine troubleshooting in cases of inconsistent data, test failure, non compliance with established regulatory standards, and facility operational problems.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on and calibrates all laboratory instruments and equipment, and assists in routine maintenance of mechanical laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures; maintains an awareness of new equipment, procedures, trends and advances in the profession; participates in continuing education activities; attends meetings, workshops and seminars as appropriate.
  • Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, HTE, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

  5. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
