General Description:

The Irvine Ranch Water District is accepting applications for a Collection Systems Technician I / II position.  The successful candidate will maintain, clean and repair sewage distribution lines, manholes, lift stations and other sewage facilities and equipment. Operate television inspection vehicle, sewer Vactor and hydro-cleaner vehicles.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Collection Systems Technician II is distinguished from the Collection Systems Technician I by the following:
 

  • Maintain, clean and repair sewage collection lines, manholes, lift stations and other sewage facilities and equipment.
  • Responsible for the surveillance, monitoring and minor repair of stationary equipment such as lift stations.
  • Maintain daily records of the operation and maintenance of stationary equipment.
  • Operate portable pumps, ventilators, generators, pneumatic tools, gas detectors and similar portable equipment.
  • Perform field maintenance of equipment to assure its proper operation.
  • Respond to complaints concerning sewer odors, sewer blockages, noisy manhole covers and make corrections or recommendations.
  • Train and assist the Collection Systems Technician I.
  • Operate hydro-cleaner, vactor, balling rig, television inspection vehicle, utility trucks or other similar vehicles.
  • Perform field maintenance of equipment to assure its proper operation.
  • Respond to complaints concerning sewer odors, sewer blockages, noisy manhole covers and make corrections or recommendations.
  • Train and assist the Collection System Technician I.
  • Operate hydro-cleaner, vactor, balling rig, television inspection vehicle, utility trucks or other similar vehicles.
  • Responsible for traffic control, proper safety procedures, reading, and interpreting sewer atlas.
  • In the absence of the Supervisor, may direct and guide the assignments of Collection Systems Technician I.

Summary of Duties:

  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the District's Facilities and related equipment.
  •  Operate and maintain, and clean lift stations, wet wells, siphons, vaults, manholes and various confined spaces.
  •  Works in lines, vaults and other confined spaces, utilizing proper safety techniques and equipment in accordance with Cal-OSHA and District's safety policies and procedures.
  •  Operates a variety of light, medium and heavy-duty motorized vehicles and equipment, such as dump trucks, pickup trucks, sewer line inspection and cleaning equipment and a variety of other hand, hydraulic and power tools, and motorized equipment; checks condition of equipment; cleans and maintains tools and equipment used in the field and shops; fuels vehicles; inspects and performs safety checks on vehicles and equipment; cleans vehicles and equipment; reports the need for vehicle and equipment repairs; trains and instructs others in safe and proper equipment operation.
  •  Assist in the minor repair of lift stations, manholes, and other sewage facilities.
  •  Maintain daily records of work completed.
  •  Responsible for traffic control, job safety methods and the reading and interpretation of the sewer atlas and record drawings.
  •  Participate in a scheduled standby program and serves as emergency first responder for the District.
  •  Responds to questions and complaints from the public regarding sewer odors, sanitary sewer overflows, and repair work.
  •  Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  •  Comply with District safety work-related practices and attend relevant safety training.
  • Responsible for all other work related duties.

Qualifications:

Collection Systems Technician I

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation is required.
  • Completion of water utility related college courses is preferred.
  •  One year experience in sewer maintenance or related field is preferred


Collection Systems Technician II

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation is required.
  • Two years of experience in sewer maintenance or related field is required.
  • Completion of water utility related college courses is preferred.



LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:


Collection Systems Technician I

  • Valid Class 'A' California Driver's License is highly desirable.
  •  CWEA Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certificate is highly desirable and must be obtained within one year.


Collection Systems Technician II

  • Valid Class 'A' California Driver's License required.
  • CWEA Grade II Collection System Maintenance Certificate required.
