About this Position:
The Water Conservation Specialist position assists in the development and implementation of key water conservation programs, to include educational programs and water-use reduction assistance to all residential and non-residential water customer classes in accordance with best management practices.

PLEASE NOTE:
Years of experience are based on a work schedule of 2,080 hours per year for full-time positions and 1,040 hours per year for part-time positions, and while work experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, depending upon the job classification, education may not be substituted for work experience. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • An Associate's Degree in Sustainability, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Public or Business Administration, Communications, Agriculture Water Management or a related field from an accredited educational institution.
  • Two years of experience in water conservation, environmental programming, education, outreach or large landscape water management.
  • Preferred:  Bachelor's Degree in Sustainability, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Public or Business Administration, Communications, Agriculture Water Management or a related field from an accredited educational institution.
  • An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date.  The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.

Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/department/service assignment.

Essential Functions

  • Participates in the development and implementation of community water conservation outreach programs as mandated by the Non Per-Capita Conservation Program (NPCCP) Stipulation and the Water Conservation Plan.
  • Participates in the development of public information strategies and materials to solicit the public's support for water conservation programs.
  • Establishes and develops working partnerships with other City departments, public agencies, regional organizations and private industry to promote water conservation messages and programs.
  • Creates and administers water use reduction programs to assist single-family and multifamily residential and non-residential water customers.
  • Promotes water conservation programs through the use of social media, written materials, presentation and by initiating customer contact.
  • Develops guidelines, technical reports, estimated water budgets and conducts site visits to assist customers with water reduction through best water management practices in the landscape and for domestic uses.
  • Analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of conservation programs and implements program improvements.
  • Drives a motor vehicle in order to present water conservation information and sets up exhibits for schools, trade shows, community events and civic groups.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Perform field and office work related to the City's water conservation program.
  • Lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Travel to/from meetings and various locations.
  • Work weekends and evenings.
