Tacoma Water is filling a Water Treatment Plant Supervisor position at our Green River Filtration Facility (GRFF) location in Ravensdale, WA. This position is the operator in charge for the City of Tacoma's hybrid direct/conventional filter plant. The GRFF is a 150-MGD water treatment plant with the following processes: raw water intake, blending, ozonation, rapid mix, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, pH and alkalinity adjustment, chemical injection, and water treatment residuals handling. The GRFF provides drinking water for approximately 320,000 people through direct service in Pierce and King Counties.

This position is a first line supervisor, overseeing all operations of the GRFF, while maintaining water quality, system integrity and safe operating conditions. This position supervises, evaluates and directs eight Water Treatment Plant Operators that provide 24-hour operation of the GRFF. The position plans and prioritizes daily, weekly, monthly and annual work activities; ensures operational and regulatory data are monitored and evaluated; ensures adequate training, tools and resources are provided for operations personnel; coordinates with other staff and outside agencies to implement operational decisions; observes system performance and trends to inform process adjustments; coordinates preparation of standard operating procedures; and prepares monthly reports for the Washington State Department of Health.

This position will be full time during day shift hours Monday through Friday. Some overtime may be required for emergency or critical situations during the night or on weekends. Performance of duties will include working near low voltage electricity, hazardous chemicals, confined spaces, heights, and near water. Duties of this position will require time in the office using a computer and at times may require working outside during inclement weather.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or equivalent and five years' experience working for a water utility and possess a valid Water Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the State of Washington at a level IV at the time of appointment, with maintenance thereafter.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Washington State Driver's License or equivalent mobility at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter; valid CPR and first aid certification prior to completion of probation with maintenance thereafter.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Principles, practices, and methods used in water quality, supply, and treatment.
  • Established experience and technical expertise in granular media filtration
  • Understanding of drinking water regulations and experience coordinating with public health officials
  • Solid background in record-keeping, both written and electronic
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and repair equipment
  • Basic computer skills in Word and Excel, ability to work with the SCADA system, and ability to work with the computerized maintenance management system
  • Acute attention to safety principles and practices
  • Ability to develop and administer policies, procedures, plans, and activities
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, grace, and courtesy
  • Basic supervisory principles and practices including training, assigning work, providing guidance, and reviewing the work of direct-report staff
  • Ability to supervise others in a manner that fosters open communication, cooperation, and respect
