Job Description

Position Summary

This position is within the laboratory section. Core responsibilities will include field work, lab analyses, and other duties as assigned. Water Quality Tech/Sr. Tech performs assigned routine and complex duties in the following areas:

Lab: Conducts chemical, and bacteriological tests on a variety of environmental matrices. Also, assist with a variety of research and development projects. Perform as a resource during the WQ Lead’s absence and assist with training water quality technicians in all aspects of the job.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities over other employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Laboratory:

  • Collect raw, recycling, and treated water samples using appropriate sample collection SOP’s and standard methods.
  • Analyzes samples in total chlorine, temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, alkalinity, total phosphorous and ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, bacteriological analyses and test watershed steam flow.
  • Calibrate and maintain instruments and equipment used for field applications.
  • Enter and maintain data in LIMS as applicable to daily or routine assignments.
  • Load, lift, and move various items such as containers or coolers.
  • Adheres to the laboratory testing procedures in accordance with Federal and State regulations applicable to water quality in the State of Colorado in the areas of microbiology, inorganic and organic chemistry.
  • Supports the Safety Plan and practices as well as the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Analyzes samples in microbiology, inorganic and organic chemical instrumentation such as but not limited to bacteriological tests, HPCs, algae counts, pH, Conductivity, TOC, alkalinity, total nutrients, fluorescence spectroscopy, IC, GC-MS (various), and ICP-MS.
  • Participates and monitors work to ensure safe and proper work practices and procedures are implemented and adopted and followed.
  • Authors and updates laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Collaborates on experimental design, testing, and report generation for research projects andstakeholders.
  • Calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation and equipment in operational condition and takes part in the preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Utilizes LIMS system to record results of unknown samples and QA/QC standards.
  • Prepares standards, QC samples, media and sample bottles for sampling as needed.
  • Procures materials needed to maintain laboratory operational.
  • Performs emergency response duties and/or stand-by duty as assigned or needed during evenings and weekends. Overtime as required.
  • Assists and trains technicians as needed.
  • Becomes technical expert of instrumentation.
  • Coordinates with vendors for new instrument installation, training, and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Leads studies on Denver Water, Water Quality monitoring systems.
  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities over other employees.
  • Performs related work as assigned

Minimum Qualifications-Water Quality Tech

Education and Experience

  • 2-year Associates Degree in Science, Water Quality Management or a related field.
  • Minimum 1 year of related work experience preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities for the position.

 Minimum Qualifications-Water Quality Sr. Tech

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology or related field
  • Minimum of two years related work experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities for the position.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

Laboratory

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 'R' Colorado driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Respiratory Protection Testing

  • This position is subject to respiratory protection testing as directed per Denver Water Physician.
