Description

The individual in this position provides technical operational changes, adjustments and repairs to plant equipment and facilities in both water and wastewater treatment plants, usually with considerable independence.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 Observes plant metering equipment on a scheduled basis, noting reading of flows at specified intervals; makes adjustments to flows of water and chemicals as necessary to maintain plant operation within operational standards.
 Keeps a log of plant operational characteristics, changes and repairs made, and other incidents of relevance to plant production.
 Collects samples of water or wastewater at stages of treatment for lab analysis.
 Reports defects of plant operations to the Superintendent.
 Supervises the work of trainees and instructs them in plant operations and the responsibilities of an operator.
 Washes prescribed areas of the plant on a designated schedule; paints areas and equipment as required.
 Maintains all required records such as operating logs, chemical and repair part inventories, maintenance logs; distributes information to internal and external personnel.
 Performs routine/daily maintenance activities on treatment plant and generator equipment.
 Support and assists in major maintenance activities on treatment plant and operation equipment.
 Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:


Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by six (6) years of progressive experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Requires Florida Department of Environmental Protection class A Water or Wastewater Treatment Operators license.

For Treatment Plant Operators assigned the Water Treatment Division:
Must possess a Class A, B, or C water operator license. Applicants not possessing a Class C Water Operation License can be hired as a Treatment Plant Operator Trainee. The Trainee position starts at 10% below the minimum of the pay grade. The Class C Water Operations License must be obtained within 18 months of employment, the Class B Water Operations License must be obtained within 4 years of employment, and the Class A Water Operations License must be obtained within 6 years of employment.

For Treatment Plant Operators assigned the Wastewater Treatment Division:
Must possess a Class A, B, or C wastewater operator license. Applicants not possessing a Class C Wastewater Operation License can be hired as a Treatment Plant Operator Trainee. The Trainee position starts at 10% below the minimum of the pay grade. The Class C Wastewater Operations License must be obtained within 18 months of employment, the Class B Wastewater Operations License must be obtained within 4 years of employment, and the Class A Wastewater Operations License must be obtained within 6 years of employment.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
