Distinguishing Characteristics
Line Maintenance Worker I:

This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Exercises no supervision.

Line Maintenance Worker II/III/IV:
This is the journey level in the class series.  Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative.  Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  May exercise technical supervision over lower level staff.  Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from lower levels by meeting the minimum requirements, successful performance, budget availability, and management recommendation.  When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the position level.
 

Example of Duties:

  • Maintains, cleans, and inspects sewer lines and connections;
  • Lays pipe and makes necessary repairs;
  • Resolves minor and major stoppages and sewage spills;
  • Advises property owner of system status and stoppage is in their sewer lateral;
  • Operates equipment including trucks, backhoe, loader, air compressor, jack hammer, and hydro rodder-vacuum unit;
  • Locates lines and manholes according to blueprints;
  • Videos City sewer mains with video truck to investigate main line problems;
  • Investigates sewer stoppages and clears problems;
  • Cleans up spills;
  • Maintains vactor truck, including greasing, checking oil, water, brakes, tires, air tanks, and rodder hose;
  • Locates sewer lateral tie-ins for property owners;
  • Uses jackhammer to uncover manholes that have been covered with blacktop; and
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

Experience
Line Maintenance Worker I:

  • One year of experience in the wastewater collection maintenance field.

Line Maintenance Worker II:

  • Three years of experience in the wastewater collection maintenance field.

Line Maintenance Worker III:

  • Fours years of experience in the wastewater collection management field, including one year as a Line Maintenance Worker II.

Line Maintenance Worker IV:

  • Five years of experience in the wastewater collection maintenance field, including one year as a Line Maintenance Worker III

Education
Line Maintenance Worker I/II/III/IV:

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented by specialized training in wastewater collection. 

Licenses and Certificates
Line Maintenance Worker I:

  • Possession of a valid California Commercial Class B driver's license.
  • Possession of a California Water Environment Association Grade I Collection System Maintenance certification.

Line Maintenance Worker II:

  • Possession of a valid California Commercial driver's license;
  • Possession of a California Water Environment Association Grade II Collection System Maintenance Certificate;
  • Possession of confined space and sewage spill response certification.

Line Maintenance Worker III:

  • Possession of a valid California Commercial driver's license;
  • Possession of a California Water Environment Association Grade III Collection System Maintenance Certificate;
  • Possession of confined space and sewage spill response certification.


Line Maintenance Worker IV:

  • Possession of a valid California Commercial driver's license;
  • Possession of a California Water Environment Association Grade IV Collection System Maintenance Certificate;
  • Possession of confined space and sewage spill response certification.
