The Wastewater Plant Operator II performs inspection of pumps, valves, and other equipment that regulates wastewater flow through treatment processes in accordance with daily checklist to keep all plant equipment in optimum working condition. Operates, maintains, lubricates, and adjusts equipment, including pumps and valves in compliance with established standards. Performs maintenance of equipment, facilities, and grounds and ensure a high level of cleanliness of assigned areas. This position works in concert with the Grade II requirements established by the State Water Resources Control Board.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs functions in accordance with a daily checklist of plant operations. Operates pumps, valves, and other equipment by hand or mechanical means to regulate the flow of wastewater through primary and secondary treatment processes. Maintains an even flow of wastewater to assure maximum efficiency of plant equipment. Operates, adjusts and maintains chemical feed equipment. Reads meters, gauges, charts and instruments. Changes recording charts and ensures their continuous operation. Performs record keeping functions such as logging plant operations, tests performed, and unusual operating conditions encountered. Prepares special reports and ones for additional maintenance and repair. Lubricates and adjusts all pumps in normal operations. Cleans and maintains mechanical head bar and head works. Services commuter on a regular basis. Takes samples of wastewater and other materials. Performs standardized tests on samples at plant laboratory. Inspects plant equipment and reports any failures or operating difficulties, cleans, and performs routine maintenance and repair work on plant equipment and facilities. Inspects assigned areas, corrects or reports safety hazards. Washes sediment basins and cleans thickener basins and sludge drying bed. Performs daily maintenance tasks such as painting of machinery, equipment, piping, and structures, sweeping and cleaning. Performs grounds maintenance and landscape maintenance in the areas in and around the wastewater treatment facility, including weed abatement. Operates various motor vehicles and performs routine vehicle maintenance, and makes safety checks. Performs facility maintenance work. Picks up or receives supplies delivered and ensures that they are properly stored. Handles and stores a variety of chemical compounds. Assists in training other wastewater personnel. Makes contact with other division personnel and other divisions concerning operations, maintenance, and repairs. Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: Applicants must have a High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California. Maintain a valid Grade II Wastewater Operator Certificate or qualification as required by the State of California. Two (2) to three (3) years of experience in the mechanical maintenance, monitoring and operation of a wastewater treatment plant. Maintain a valid California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
Compensation and Benefits: The Salary Range for this position is $23.63 - $28.74 per hour. Salary range placement is dependent on the candidate’s qualifications. The City of Delano offers an excellent benefit package including: Comprehensive City paid medical, dental, and vision benefits for the employee and a portion of the premium for their dependents. City pays $30/month for Bilingual Pay. City pays $35/month for Longevity Pay after 8 continuous years of City service. Life insurance equal to 1 yr base salary with a minimum of $30,000.
