The Water / Wastewater Technician is responsible for monitoring the City's water and wastewater systems in compliance with relevant government regulations. This position conducts inspections, operates and maintains water and wastewater monitoring equipment, maintains records, and prepares reports.  

The ideal candidate for this position will be a creative problem solver with the knowledge of applicable, federal, and state regulations as well as basic chemistry and math and their application to water quality, recycled water, and drinking water standards. In addition, the ideal candidate will be dedicated to public service, possess excellent oral and written communication skills, be customer service oriented, and have outstanding analytical skills.

The Ontario Municipal Utilities Company is committed to the protection of the environment, public health, and its sewerage system through regulating the quality of wastewater that passes into its sewerage system.
The Utilities Department within the Ontario Municipal Utility Company consists of two Divisions; Engineering and Operations. The Utilities Operations Division's responsibilities include water production, water distribution operation, maintenance and repair, customer service/meter reading, Backflow Prevention and wastewater collection system operation, maintenance, and repair. These activities play a vital role in ensuring that the water system is operated and maintained to meet our residents and businesses water needs and the sewer collection system is maintained to prevent sewer overflow. The Municipal Utility Company provides affordable, high-quality drinking water that meets all Federal, State, and local requirements.
The City of Ontario serves more than 13 billion gallons of water annually to the City's 170,000-plus residents and 6,000-plus businesses through the operation and maintenance of 20 active groundwater wells, 572 miles of potable and recycled water pipelines, and 12 water reservoirs that store 75 million gallons of water. Approximately 80% of Ontario's drinking water comes from local groundwater sources, including groundwater supplied to   the City of Ontario from 27 wells and two water treatment plants operated by the Chino Basin Desalter Authority (CDA). The remaining 20% of Ontario's drinking water is imported surface water supplied through the State Water Project and treated at the Agua de Lejos Treatment Plant before it is delivered to the City for use. Recycled water is provided for non-potable uses such as outdoor irrigation and some industrial applications. During the past five years, more than 300 recycled water service connections have been completed, supplying nearly 10% of Ontario's total water demand. 

The essential functions typically performed by the Water / Wastewater Technician include the following:
  • Conducts inspections of industrial users' facilities; writes inspection reports; issues notices of correction.
  • Collects water and wastewater samples to meet local, state, and federal monitoring requirements.
  • Assists with the City's Water Conservation Program.
  • Investigates wastewater overflow incidents and prepares reports in compliance with wastewater discharge regulations.
  • Reviews water quality reports for compliance with drinking water standards.
  • Reviews and evaluates industrial wastewater monitoring reports.
  • Maintains records related to water quality and chain of custody records for water and wastewater samples.
  • Prepares industrial wastewater permits.
  • Responds to customer inquiries regarding water quality and industrial wastewater pretreatment requirements.

High school diploma or recognized equivalent, including or supplemented by technical courses or training in chemistry, mathematics, environmental engineering, computer operations, and other subjects applicable to water and wastewater quality control.

One year of experience related to water quality, industrial wastewater pretreatment, or related work experience. Two years of applicable college education may be substituted for one year of experience.

A valid California Class C driver license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
Special Requirements

Ability to obtain job related certificates.

Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding water quality, wastewater discharge and pretreatment.
