The Lead Wastewater Operator will be responsible for the operations and maintenance activities associated with the facility and will serve as the back-up to site management as required. The candidate will be offered:

 Position Responsibilities:

  • Will serve as a back-up for site management and assist with overseeing operations, maintenance and overall management activities associated with the facility.
  • Under the guidance and direction of management, will be responsible for training, mentoring and development of direct and/or indirect reports.
  • Assists with ensuring that the facility and operations meet all applicable regulatory requirements and are operated in accordance with design criteria; communicate and meet with local regulatory agencies regarding facility compliance with regulations and permits.
  • Prepares regulatory reports as needed for the California Regional Water Quality Board.
  • Under the guidance and direction of management, will assist with implementing techniques and methods of process control that will increase plant and operational efficiencies.
  • Assists with ensuring compliance of the designated site-specific safety plan.
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance changes that will be required based on plant changes, system/process modifications or new equipment installations.
  • Performs day-to-day operational tasks at the site, including working with the team to upgrade facility systems, equipment and infrastructure as needed.
  • Performs routine maintenance duties and carry out requests from supervisor; also perform minor building maintenance, grounds maintenance, cleaning, painting and custodial duties.
  • Starts, stops and regulates electric motors, pumps, air compressors and other related equipment.
  • Reads meters, gauges, and other control and measuring devices; maintain records of facility operations in the log book.
  • Collects samples for laboratory testing as necessary; analyze, understand and compute lab sample results in order to improve plant performance and maintain optimum operations.
  • Ensures compliance with safety protocols for the site.
  • Implements techniques and methods of process control that will increase plant and operational efficiencies.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  • Exercises safe work practices by following all Company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including attendance at all required safety training programs. 
  • Participates in Company’s continuous improvement programs and provide support to team efforts. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years of wastewater plant operations or related work experience
  • Experience with working with regulatory agencies (e.g. municipalities)
  • Must be able to provide proof of certification(s), as designated by facility and/or state requirements and permits
  • Basic understanding of the aerobic digestion process
  • Must have a valid driver's license in good standing
  • Complete and maintain HAZWOPER certification with the 40-hour HAZWOPER environmental health and safety class, and annual 8-hour refresher classes
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software (e.g. Excel), Google and/or PC programs
  • Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Solid organization and time/project management skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work independently manage multiple responsibilities (i.e. self-starter, self-motivated)
  • English language competency
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed



  • Grade 3 and/or 4 wastewater operator certifications
  • 2+ years of experience managing a team of 3+ staff members

  • While performing the duties of this job, this position may require the individual to work rotating shift assignments, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Standby and on-call duty is required, and the individual must be able to respond to the facility within one hour. Some shifts will require working alone.
  • Must be able to lift and move 50-60 lbs. manually without restriction.
