The City of Chandler Public Works & Utilities Department is currently accepting applications for up to WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR II or WASTWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR Idepending on the applicants qualifications. 

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR II starting pay at $24.52 per hour

Classification Summary (Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II):
The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform semi-skilled and skilled operations duties in a wastewater treatment facility, including monitoring, operating, and adjusting equipment. This is the journey level class within the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Series.  Employees in this classification perform the full range of responsibilities in the operation of a wastewater treatment facility.  Additionally, an employee in this class performs data collection and reporting functions to ensure compliance with City, County and State water quality requirements. An employee in this class may be assigned to other duties in the City’s Public Works & Utilities Department. This position may be required to work varied shifts throughout the year including nights, weekends and holidays and must be able to work overtime and standby as required.

Essential Functions (list not exhaustive):
• Operates, monitors, and adjusts all wastewater plant process equipment, including pumps, motors, gauges, meters, aerators, blowers, chlorinators, chemical feeds, sludge equipment and the SCADA system to ensure treated water meets City, County and State quality standards;
• Performs daily rounds at the plant by visually checking facilities, equipment machinery, chemical levels, and related systems to ensure proper operation and to detect equipment failures, potential leaks, or other problem situations;
• Monitors off-site wells and reclaimed distribution systems, including operating equipment by reading chemical and flow levels; inspects equipment, identifies equipment problems, may make minor repairs and adjustments;
• Recognizes the need for and makes treatment and operational changes to the wastewater processes and distribution systems to meet water quality standards; shuts down and starts plant systems as necessary;
• Monitors operation of disinfection process equipment;
• Reads and interprets meters, gauges and instruments; enters daily readings into computer database and/or spreadsheets;
• Responds to citizen inquiries, complaints, and suggestions regarding water reclamation; gives plant tours;
• Prepares and maintains work records, including work orders, water pressure records, flow records, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs, compliance reports and other documentation;
• Performs sampling and laboratory testing duties;
• Inspects, tests, and evaluates incoming supplies, materials, and equipment related to wastewater treatment;
• Monitors inventory levels of equipment, chemicals and supplies; estimates usage; prepares cost estimates; orders and purchases required supplies and materials;
• Unloads and stores hazardous chemicals, batches and mixes hazardous chemical solutions, and transfers bulk storage to day tanks for chemical feed operations;
 
Minimum Qualifications (Operator II):
• High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
• Two (2) years’ experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a water and/or wastewater  treatment plant, facilities or collection system including at least one (1) year of wastewater treatment plant experience; and
• ADEQ Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate at time of hire or promotion; and
• Hazwoper 40 Hour Certification within 6 months of hire or promotion; and
• Ability to pass respirator FIT testing within six (6) months of hire or promotion date; and
• Arizona Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.  

Desired Qualifications (Operator II):
• College level coursework;
• Five (5) years wastewater treatment system experience;
• ADEQ Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Certificate.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR I starting pay at $21.83 per hour

Classification Summary (Operator I):
The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform operations duties in a wastewater treatment facility, including monitoring, operating, and adjusting equipment. This is an entry-level position within the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Series.  Employees in this classification will acquire the necessary skills and related training to perform the more routine operation duties at a wastewater treatment facility.   An employee in this class may be assigned to other duties in the City’s Public Works & Utilities Department. This position may be required to work varied shifts throughout the year including nights, weekends and holidays and must be able to work overtime and standby as required.

Essential Functions (list not exhaustive):
• Assists in operating, monitoring, and adjusting all wastewater plant process equipment, including pumps, motors, gauges, meters, aerators, blowers, chlorinators, chemical feeds, sludge equipment and the SCADA system to ensure treated water meets City, County and State quality standards;
• Operates dewatering equipment including gravity belt thickeners and belt filter presses;
• Performs daily rounds at the plant by visually checking facilities, equipment, machinery, chemical levels and related systems to ensure proper operation and to detect equipment failures, potential leaks, or other problem situations;
• Operates valves, gates and pumps to adjust water flows and chemical injection rates; Learns to recognize the need for and may make basic treatment and operational changes to the wastewater processes and distribution systems;
• Reads and interprets meters, gauges, and instruments; enters daily readings into computer databases and/or spreadsheets;
• Performs general site maintenance activities; cleans out basins, clarifiers, channels, reservoirs, filters, and cleans plant process and building and areas;
• Helps organize contracted sludge hauling activities;
• May assist with preventative maintenance tasks including assisting maintenance staff with repairs of related equipment;
• Performs building and facility maintenance and custodial tasks;
• Prepares and maintains work records, including work orders, flow records, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs, and other documentation;
• May perform sampling and laboratory testing duties;
• Assists with inspecting, testing and evaluating incoming supplies, materials and equipment.
 
Minimum Qualifications (Operator I):
• High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
• One (1) year  experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a water or wastewater utility or other related industrial experience or are enrolled or have completed the City of Chandler’s TEMP Plant Operator Trainee Program; and
• ADEQ Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate at time of hire or promotion; and
• ADEQ Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification within one (1) year of hire or promotion date; and
• Hazwoper 40 Hour Certification within 6 months of hire or promotion date; and
• Ability to pass respirator FIT testing within six (6) months of hire or promotion date; and
• Valid Arizona Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
 
Desirable Qualifications (Operator I):
• At least one (1) year of wastewater treatment system or plant experience;

The position available is a regular full-time position and is subject to a six (6) month probationary period.  A register of qualified candidates will be active for four months should another position become available.

The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-employment drug/alcohol test as a condition of employment; all offers are contingent upon negative test results. In addition, a Universal background check will be conducted for this position.

The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-employment MVRRS (Motor Vehicle Record Request System) check as a condition of employment; all offers are contingent upon acceptable results.
