DEFINITION
Perform skilled work in the operation, monitoring, controlling, testing and troubleshooting of the water treatment process. Exercise a level of reasonable care and judgment consistent with the experience and training appropriate to their level of certification. Plant entry level positions work as part of a team, focused on proficient operation and monitoring of equipment in (Reverse Osmosis & Direct Filtration) water treatment plants. To perform skilled work of providing reverse osmosis and greensand water treatment plant operations and maintenance services, and to perform a variety of technical tasks related to the assigned area of responsibility. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills which support the City of Brighton's mission and values. Regular and on-call shifts are required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Water Utility Supervisor, and functional and technical supervision from the Senior Operator or other operators as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT/ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Observes, reads, interprets meters and gauges and takes appropriate action in response to variations in operating conditions.
Complies with safety procedures. Participates in safety training including equipment, chemical handling, PPE, etc.
Calls attention to and reports potential and actual hazard conditions as they arise. Handles emergencies using safety equipment and procedures to protect public health and facilities.
Operates pumps, engines, generators and valves to control processes to move water through the treatment process. Operates plants and systems according to Standard Operating Procedures.
Controls chemical feed systems.
Collects daily water samples, performs laboratory tests and maintain accurate laboratory records.
Maintains accurate logs and records data required for regulatory and operational reporting on the physical changes made to the plant. Data recorded includes alarms, adjustments made, troubleshooting, equipment rotations, and instrument readings.
Inputs readings from process control tests/chemical usage into database programs.
Reports emergency and major malfunctions to supervisor. Handles emergencies using safety equipment and procedures to protect public health and facilities.
Performs routine corrective and preventative maintenance functions and minor repairs as necessary to keep equipment running and treatment processes functioning within operation parameters.
Attends technical and safety training meetings, courses and seminars.
Performs routine housekeeping and physical cleanup of work areas, equipment and buildings.
Maintains certifications as required.
Performs shift work (days, evenings and nights), overtime, and holidays as needed by supervisor. Works rotating on-call shifts.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge off:
Basic analytical skills needed to compile, analyze and interpret numerous facts and details drawn from various sources to resolve problems and devise minor repairs.
Basic mathematical skills required to perform accurate calculations.
Basic mechanical skills to understand, operate and monitor industrial equipment. Ability to use basic hand and power tools.
Basic computer skills required to work in a high technology, automated environment.
Basic communications skills needed to interact with coworkers, supervisors, vendors and the public sufficiently to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Ability to:
Recognize events and suggest proper solutions.
Read and interpret equipment and process gauges, safety data sheets and rules.
Assist in and maintain clear and concise plant logs and records.
Follow verbal and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Operator D - Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent and six months experience or six months related education preferred. Possession of a Colorado Class D Water Works Operator's Certificate or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Operator C - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade including or supplemented by training in chemistry, biology or other fields related to the natural sciences and wastewater treatment. Possession of a Class C Water Works Operator's Certificate, one year experience in Reverse Osmosis plant operation.
Operator B - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade including or supplemented by training in chemistry, biology or other fields related to the natural sciences and wastewater treatment. Experience working with mechanical and/or processing equipment is desirable.
Possession of a Class B Water Works Operator's Certificate, 3 years of experience in municipal water treatment plant operations, including 1 year experience in the operation and maintenance of a Reverse Osmosis water treatment plant.
Operator A - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade including or supplemented by training in chemistry, biology or other fields related to the natural sciences and wastewater treatment. Experience working with mechanical and/or processing equipment is desirable.
Possession of a Class A Water Works Operator's Certificate, 4 years of experience in municipal water treatment plant operations, including 1 year experience in the operation and maintenance of a large municipal Reverse Osmosis water treatment plant.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. The operator may be exposed to fumes, pathogens, airborne particles and various chemicals, some of which may be toxic. The operator is exposed to various conditions including excessive noise and extreme heat or cold. Use of a respirator may be required for some tasks and the operator may have to work in confined spaces.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License with safe driving record.
Possession of a Colorado Water Works Operator's Certificate or the ability to obtain within one year.
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
