Job Description:


Under general supervision or guidance, perform routine microbiological, biological, physical and other related analyses of drinking water. Participate in microbiological investigations required for compliance monitoring and additional water quality assessment in wells, reservoirs, lakes, treatment plants and distribution systems. Support the water quality department laboratory daily operations. This position is located in San Jose, CA.


Essential Functions:


  • Perform bacteriological testing of water in accordance with EPA approved methods to meet State and Federal drinking water standards.


  • Analyze raw and treated water samples from wells, surface water sources, distribution systems, and customer homes etc.


  • Analyze annual Proficiency Testing (PT) samples as required to maintain laboratory certification.


  • Assist with implementing TNI requirements for laboratory testing and certification.


  • Assist in new instruments procurement, methods development and ELAP method development and certification process for new methods.


  • Prepare media, standard solutions, reagents and perform sample preparations as required.


  • Use LIMS for data entry, reporting, record keeping, sample control and tracking.


  • Perform necessary QA/QC measures to ensure compliance with the laboratory Quality Control/Quality Assurance Program.


  • Assist with training laboratory technicians and/or cross-train other analysts as needed.


  • Assist with the assembly of sample kits for sample collection when necessary; prepare sample labels, and chain of custody (COCs) as needed.


  • Assist in scheduling bacteriological samples and implementing the monitoring schedule.


  • Review and monitor the bacteriological sampling schedule for all regulatory sampling.


  • Review and track results for regulatory compliance; in-house and contract laboratory and make results available for decision-making in a timely manner.


  • Maintain accurate records, review microbiological generated reports; responsible for the recordkeeping of hardcopy micro laboratory data (binders, reports, COC and QC).


  • Assist with preparation of the microbiological monthly regulatory reports for compliance.


  • Provide data interpretation for Water Quality Program Managers and customers.


  • Communicate with field personnel and Program Managers concerning COC errors, results or re-sampling.


  • Understand the notification procedure for the Revised Total Coliform Rule and Groundwater Rule samples and follow closely.


  • Assist in maintaining laboratory safety program.


  • Purchase supplies, monitor laboratory inventory for supplies and participate in inventory management of the microbiology laboratory.


  • Perform assignments in accordance with safety rules, regulations and emergency procedures, laboratory chemical hygiene plan, etc.


  • Participate in Continuous Improvement (CI) activities.


  • Provide weekend coverage (set up samples, read results, notify managers of positive results); on call for weekends and holidays as required.


  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in microbiology, chemistry, biology, or related field, with six years of experience working in laboratory environment, supporting microbiological or chemical analysis, or


  • Master's degree an accredited college or university in chemistry, microbiology, biology, or related field with four years of experience working in laboratory environment, supporting microbiological or chemical analysis, or


  • Two years of experience as an Assistant Microbiologist.




  • Have a working knowledge of EPA methods, the EPA Manual for the Certification of Laboratories, Standard Methods and Title 22, where appropriate.


Salary Range: $112,056 - $147,852
