Salary: $6,002.00 - $7,309.00 Monthly

Correctional Industries (CI) within the Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill a permanent Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 2 position. This position is located at McNeil Island Stewardship in Steilacoom, WA. This position typically works Wednesday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This position monitors the Well System and water distribution system on McNeil Island and helps in the Wastewater treatment area as needed. This position instructs and trains incarcerated individuals in the maintenance of equipment and related plant operations. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 2 (WWTPO2) position is to ensure that chemical testing meets Federal and/or State regulations, Ensure/Enforces RCW, WAC rules DOH / DOE and applicable Department of Correction Policies.

Duties

 

 Duties include, but are not limited to:


Monitor well system, water tank and Distribution Network and/or Wastewater Treatment Plant: 

  • Monitor and maintain the well system at McNeil Island concurrent to the regulations and policy set by the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Ecology (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Corrections.
  • Monitor and maintain adequate quantity and quality of portable water to staff and residents on McNeil Island; ensure sufficient quantities of water are available for fire protection.
  • Operates the plant per Department of Ecology (DOE), Department of Health (DOH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and applicable Department of Corrections policies.

Instruct and Train: 

  • Instruct, train and supervise offenders in the maintenance of water equipment and the related physical plant. 
  • Inspects well house, water distribution system and makes recommendations as
    necessary or performs required maintenance.

Chemical Testing: 

  • Perform chemical tests as required by DOH; analyze and correlate test results and make adjustments to operations accordingly. 
  • Maintain logs and charts, prepare reports as needed. 
  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance of fire protection systems, including fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, and other associated equipment.

Other duties as assigned such as: 

  • Operate and maintain a number of water pump stations, reservoirs and elevated tanks. 
  • Assist other trades when assigned.
  • Operate and maintain a number of wastewater stations.

 

Qualifications

Required qualifications: 

  • Valid Washington State Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Health as a Water Treatment Plant Operator 1 or higher.
  • Valid Washington State Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Health as a Water Distribution Manager 1 or higher. 
  • Certification by Department of Ecology as a Group 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.
  • Valid Washington driver's license.

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Ability to perform Chemical tests, analyzes result, and make appropriate adjustment to the water treatment system.
  • Computer skills with experience in Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated organization and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and analytical skills.
  • Maintains the highest standards of personal / professional ethical conduct.
  • Ability to apply negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with management, peers, offenders and the public as required to carry out.
