SALARY: $18.98 – $22.00 per hour


An employee in this class assists the Collection System Supervisor in the responsibilities of planning, coordinating, organizing, assigning, supervising and inspecting the work of subordinate employees, and ensuring that installations, repairs and new projects are completed with excellence. The employee may perform more difficult aspects of the operation, and will do the work as well as supervise the work. Works under general supervision of the Collection System Supervisor or designee. Works assigned on-call, holiday and weekend shifts.


  • Assists in supervising subordinates in daily job activities
  • Assists in planning, organizing, and coordinating the activities of sewer collection system operation, maintenance and repairs
  • Operates valves, pumps, motors, test equipment
  • Operates Lift Stations
  • Completes departmental reports and compliance reports for FDEP
  • Helps train new employees
  • Repairs irrigation systems
  • Performs routine maintenance on waste water collection systems
  • Installs and repairs waste water lines, well points, pumps, and all related facilities
  • Digs and refills ditches, loads dirt and construction materials
  • Operates equipment in flushing water lines
  • Performs taps on waste water and reclaim system
  • Locates buried pipes, valves, etc.
  • Turns services on and off
  • Maintains, inspects, and repairs pumps
  • Training of new employees
  • Maintains reports and records as they apply to the job functions
  • Performs repairs, installs and system improvements
  • Covers on-call rotations
  • Locates underground utilities
  • Operates excavators, backhoes, crane trucks, trenchers, borers, trailers and other heavy equipment including vac trucks
  • Reviews and evaluates the work of subordinate employees
  • Plans for, supervises and performs permit required confined space entries
  • Assists in preparing requests for equipment, supplies, and materials
  • Reports defects and needs for major repair to the Collection System Supervisor
  • Enforces the use of proper procedures, standards, and safety operations
  • Assists with the coordination and inspections of the work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with regulatory rules and department procedures


  • Knowledge of materials, methods, practices and equipment used in sewer collection system construction, operation and maintenance, safety, water distribution, plumbing and utility work best practices
  • Knowledge of basic electrical safety and the ability to perform basic troubleshooting with a hand held electrical meter
  • Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations and best practices for safety
  • Ability to solve problems in a rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate medium & heavy machinery, hand tools, power tools and portable pumps
  • Ability to communicate verbally using the English language.


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License, preferably Class “B” CDL, or obtain within 1 year of employment.

And at least 2 of the following Certifications:

  • Class “C” Water Treatment Plant Operator, or higher;
  • Water Distribution License Level 3, or higher;
  • Backflow Assembly Tester Certification; or
  • Training in Treeo or approved equivalent: (Training will need to be obtained within 1 year of employment); or
  • Introduction to Lift Station Maintenance; or
  • Wastewater Collection System Cleaning & Maintenance; or
  • Introduction to Electrical Maintenance; or
  • SCADA and Electrical Training; or
  • Experience in heavy manual labor and the use of hand and light power tools; or
  • Two (2) years of experience in heavy manual labor and the use of hand and light power tools preferably in the water distribution/sewer collection area
