The City of Chandler has an exceptional opportunity for a Water Plant Operator II to work in a well-established and well-managed municipality within the Public Works & Utilities Department. The Utility Divisions are responsible for the operation and maintenance of City's water, wastewater and reclaimed water infrastructure. The City of Chandler is one of Arizona's first master-planned cities; it is located in the southeast part of the Phoenix metro area and has a current population of approximately 250,000, its population is estimated to be 285,000 at its planned build-out. 
 
Salary: $24.52 - $32.62 Hourly
 
Classification Summary:
The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform semi-skilled and skilled operations duties in a water treatment facility, including monitoring, operating, and adjusting equipment.  This is the journey level class within the Water Plant Operator series.  Employees in this classification perform the full range of responsibilities in the operation of a water treatment facility and additionally monitor and operate the City's potable distribution system.  Additionally, an employee in this class performs data collection and reporting functions to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and County water quality requirements.  This position is required to work rotating shifts (including nights, holidays, and weekends) throughout the year and must be able to work overtime as required.
 
Essential Functions (list not exhaustive):
• Operates, monitors, and adjusts all water treatment plant process and distribution system equipment including control panels, gauges, meters and the SCADA system to detect and correct variations in operating conditions to ensure treated water meets Federal, State and County quality standards;
• Makes hourly rounds of the plant conducting visual inspection to monitor, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, ballasted flocculation, solids handling and disinfectant processes.
• Monitors and adjusts control panels, gauges, and meters, including SCADA system, to detect and correct variations in operating conditions;
• Monitors off-site wells, including operating equipment by reading chemical and flow levels; identifies equipment problems, determining if an employee needs to be sent to the well sites, makes adjustments, as needed through SCADA;
• Recognizes the need for and makes treatment and operational changes to the water treatment processes and distribution systems to meet water quality standards; shuts down and starts plant as necessary;
• Reads and interprets meters, gauges, and instruments; enters daily readings into computer databases and spreadsheets;
• Gives plant tours;
• Responds to emergency situations and alarms, such as power outages, system and fire alarms, and adverse water treatment conditions; 
• Collects and performs water testing;
• Monitors operations of mixing, flocculation, settling, and filtration equipment and makes adjustments as needed;
• Prepares and maintains work records, including work orders, water pressure records, flow records, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs, compliance reports and other required documentation;
• Inspects, tests, and evaluates incoming supplies, materials and equipment related to water treatment;
• Monitors inventory levels of equipment, chemicals and supplies; estimates usage; orders and purchases required supplies and materials;
• Unloads and stores hazardous chemicals, batches and mixes hazardous chemical solutions, and transfers bulk storage to day tanks for chemical feed operations; 
• Monitors wastewater lift stations and water reclamation plant after hours, on weekends and during holidays.
  
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
• Three (3) years water and/or wastewater treatment plant, facilities or distribution system experience including at least two (2) years of water treatment plant experience; and
• ADEQ Grade III Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate at time of hire or promotion;
• ADEQ Grade III Water Distribution Certificate at time of hire or promotion; and
• Hazwoper 40 Hour Certification within six (6) months of hire or promotion date; and
• Valid Arizona Driver's License with an acceptable driving record; or 
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.   
 
Desirable Qualifications: 
• College level course work;
• Five (5) years water treatment system experience;
• ADEQ Grade IV Water Treatment Certificate;
• ADEQ Grade IV Water Distribution Certificate.
 
This position is a regular full-time position and is subject to a six (6) month promotional probationary period. A register of qualified candidates will be active for four (4) months should another position become available. 
 
The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-employment drug/alcohol test as a condition of employment; all offers are contingent upon negative test results.
