Birmingham Water Works is seeking an Assistant General Manager (AGM) to lead the Operations and Technical Division. The Division is responsible for ensuring that the water system provides safe, quality, and dependable water to customers of the Birmingham Water Works. Currently, the Operations and Technical Division consists of approximately 225 employees and has the following departments: Purification, Water Resources, Supervisory Controlled and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Security, Industrial & Commercial Accounts, and EnviroLab/Water Quality. The AGM is accountable to the General Manager and Board of Directors to ensure systems are in place to meet the organization’s water quality standards and to comply with standard operating procedures in order to meet and exceed all current and future EPA and Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) regulations. This includes planning for adequate supplies for future water demands.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree, but at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Management, or any related field. The ideal applicant will have twelve (12) years of progressive experience in the field of operations and technical services with at least ten (10) years in a leadership level position in operations and technical services field in the water industry, or closely related field with comparable sized systems. The selected candidate will have a strong understanding and experience in water treatment (surface water) operations, preferably in a system with multiple treatment facilities. A strong understanding and experience in the distribution process of potable and raw water (preferably in a system that has multiple intakes and varying geographical elevations), and a strong understanding of a SCADA system is preferred. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated work experience leading, managing and motivating people to accomplish strategic business goals and be able to support a performance management culture. Preference will be given to individuals with Professional Engineer License (PE) as it is highly preferred.
