The City of Chowchilla is seeking a full time Wastewater System Supervisor who, under general direction, supervises, develops, and directs the work of staff performing difficult and complex technical and administrative support related to all programs and activities of the City’s Treatment Operations and Collection System Maintenance Operations; assists with long- and short-term project planning and overseeing the design, construction, maintenance, and operations of wastewater collection system and wastewater treatment plant, facilities, and related appurtenances and other programs; works with technical and engineering staff to monitor and maintain water quality in accordance with State requirements; coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies for services such as meter reading and repair; provides complex and responsible support to the Public Works Director and others in areas of expertise; and performs other duties as assigned.

Incumbent serves as the Division Manager to the City’s Treatment Operations and Collection System Maintenance Operations system. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of wastewater operations, maintenance, and operations staff either directly or through lead workers. Incumbents are expected to independently perform the full range of wastewater treatment and collection, maintenance and operations duties. Performance of the work requires the use of considerable independence, initiative and discretion within established guidelines. This classification is distinguished from the water worker series in that it has direct supervisory responsibilities. 

Prerequisites

Education and Experience

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in a directly related field; AND one (1) year of full-time lead work experience in water quality, monitoring, collection, distribution or maintenance of a wastewater facility.
  • OR, any combination of training and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in operation, monitoring, testing, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and systems at a level equivalent to Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III - OR - Pursuant to Title 23, Division 3, SWRCB, Chapter 26, Classification of Wastewater Treatment Plants and Operator Certification.

 

Licenses and Certifications

  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license by time of appointment.
  • Possession and maintenance of a Grade III certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board at time of application.
  • Possession and maintenance of a California Water Environment Association certificate, Grade III within 24 months of appointment.
  • Possession and maintenance of a Qualified Applicator Category “N” Certificate from the California Department of Pesticides Regulation will be required within 12 months of appointment.
 

Benefits

Benefits: 

Holidays: The City recognizes 11 days each calendar year plus 2 floating holidays.

Vacation: Employees earn 3.70 hours of vacation per pay period for the first three years and increases to the maximum of 9.23 hours per pay period.

Sick Leave: 3.70 hours earned per pay period with no maximum accrual cap.

Retirement:  Employees are members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The city does not participate in Social Security.

Health Insurance: Employee pays a portion for employee and dependent coverage of medical, dental, health and life insurance.

Medicare: City pays 1.45% of salary; employee pays 1.45% of salary.

SDI: 1% of salary paid by employee.

Deferred Compensation: CalPERS 457 Deferred Compensation program is available for employee participation.

Additional: Longevity pay based on years of service; City pays all state mandated training and licenses.
