Water Control Operator-Sweeney

As part of the Water Treatment division, the Water Control Operator is responsible for ensuring the production of quality, safe drinking water to customers. The Control Operator monitors the various functions of the water treatment plant facilities flow rates including performing chemical analysis, controlling plant flow rates to maintain adequate water supply and regulating plant discharge flows that provide the required pressure and tank levels in the distribution system.
The Control Operator also backwashes filters to remain compliant with filter effluent turbidity rules, monitors residuals processing facility and NPDES discharge for compliance and sludge pumping scheduling and evaluates water usage needs by the city, and adjusts quantity of raw water being treated to meet expected future demands.
Additionally, the Control Operator will perform lab tests to determine water quality and verify online instrumentation readings, complete reports and log various data on quality, quantity, and operational information, monitor plant security utilizing perimeter cameras, and control access to the facility. The Control Operator ensures proper operation and cleaning of filters by monitoring filter run-time, head loss, and efficient flow and turbidities, orders chemicals based on current need, projected usage, and weather conditions, performs maintenance and calibration on lab instruments and online metering equipment, cross-references lab test results, and ensures that online instrumentation are calibrated and transmitting accurate readings to the SCADA system, monitors all of the measured parameters of the treatment process in order to ensure that all local, state, federal regulations are being complied with, provides supervision and direction to the Water Process Operators and performs other related job duties as assigned.
The position requires a NCWTFOCB A or B Surface License, a High School Diploma or equivalent, two (2) years’ related work experience, and a valid NC Driver’s License.
This position works rotating, 12-hour shifts and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed in an office, a water treatment plant, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather.
The position is a pay grade 15 with a starting salary of $39,499.
