Durham County is seeking a Utilities Superintendent with a track record of outstanding operations management and excellent staff leadership. The next Superintendent will lead with a customer service focus that effectively serves all internal departments in the County as well as works to meet County regional water quality to ensure that customers have safe and dependable utility services. A highly anticipated move into a new facility in 2021 is a great opportunity for someone with transition and change management skills. Utilities Superintendent Position Overview: Reporting to the Deputy Director of Engineering and Environmental Services, the Utilities Superintendent oversees a staff of 14 in managing the operations and maintenance of the Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant, associated wastewater collection system, associated reuse water system, and potable water system. The Superintendent also monitors the wastewater treatment plant and identifies needed changes and potential problems; interprets lab data and makes necessary adjustments; as well as all administrative duties related to operations management and staff leadership. With a departmental budget of $7M, the Superintendent oversees a department that interfaces with other departments in the County and has extensive external contact with citizens, business leaders, builders and developers as the County experiences unprecedented growth and development resulting in required expansion of the utility systems. Upcoming responsibilities include assisting in the management of multiple capital improvement projects including an upgrade of the Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) System to include diffused aeration, the design of a new sodium hypochlorite feed system, upgrade of additional chemical feeding systems, and the upgrade of pump stations within the collection system. Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a preference for a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, environmental science or a related field and five years of experience in municipal or industrial wastewater treatment OR fifteen years of equivalent experience which includes at least one year in a supervisory capacity. Five years of supervision experience preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess and maintain North Carolina Grade IV Biological Water Pollution Control System Operator Certification, a Grade II Collection System Operator license and must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina. PREFERRED: Preference may be given to candidates also possessing a State of North Carolina Grade 'C' (or higher) Well certification and/or a Grade 'C' (or higher) Water Distribution certification. The salary range is $59,400 - $106,920 (beginning salary will be commensurate with experience).
